Uppuveli Hotels: Beachfront Stays with Restaurants and Town Access

Uppuveli is Trincomalee's most convenient beach base. It sits only about 6 kilometers north of town, packs beachfront hotels, cafés and restaurants into a compact strip, and lets you walk to dinner, which nowhere else on this coast really does.

This guide covers the beach, the hotel landscape, and who should pick quieter Nilaveli instead.

Quick answer

Uppuveli is Trincomalee's most convenient beach base: beachfront hotels, cafés and restaurants in one compact strip only about 6 kilometers from town. It is the only area on this coast where you can walk barefoot to dinner. Choose it for first visits, groups and budget beach stays; choose quieter Nilaveli if the beach itself is the point.

The beach

Uppuveli Beach is shorter and more lived-in than Nilaveli: hotels and restaurants sit directly on the sand, fishing boats share the shore, and in the evening the beachfront tables fill up. In season the water is calm and swimmable, and the sunrise over the bay is a daily event worth setting an alarm for.

It is a social beach rather than an empty one. If you picture reading alone on a deserted shore, look north to Nilaveli or Kuchchaveli. If you picture a swim followed by a short barefoot walk to lunch, Uppuveli is exactly that.

Hotels in Uppuveli: what to expect

The strip mixes beachfront hotels, small boutique-style properties and simple guesthouses a street or two back from the sand. The compact layout is the advantage: whatever your budget, you are within walking distance of several places to eat and a beach bar or two.

Because the area is small, beachfront rooms are limited and the best-located properties fill first in season. Booking early for July and August is sensible. Guesthouses behind the beachfront offer noticeably better value at the cost of a two-minute walk.

Who Uppuveli suits

First-time visitors who want one base that does everything, friends traveling together, couples who want dinners out rather than seclusion, and budget travelers who want a beach without depending on tuk-tuks for every meal. It also works as the social half of a split stay, paired with two quiet nights in Nilaveli.

Getting there and around

Uppuveli is 10 to 15 minutes from Trincomalee Town by tuk-tuk, which makes the fort, Koneswaram Temple, the markets, the bus stand and the train station easy half-day territory. Nilaveli and the Pigeon Island boats are 15 to 20 minutes further north. The Commonwealth War Cemetery, small and moving, sits right by the Uppuveli road.

Quick answers

Is Uppuveli walkable?

Yes, and that is its main advantage. Hotels, restaurants and cafés sit in a compact strip on and behind the beach, so most evenings need no transport at all.

How far is Uppuveli from Trincomalee town?

About 6 kilometers, or 10 to 15 minutes by tuk-tuk.

Can you do Pigeon Island from Uppuveli?

Yes. The boats leave from Nilaveli Beach, 15 to 20 minutes north by tuk-tuk, so an early start from Uppuveli works fine.
