Uppuveli Hotels: Beachfront Stays with Restaurants and Town Access

Uppuveli Beach is shorter and more lived-in than Nilaveli: hotels and restaurants sit directly on the sand, fishing boats share the shore, and in the evening the beachfront tables fill up. In season the water is calm and swimmable, and the sunrise over the bay is a daily event worth setting an alarm for.

It is a social beach rather than an empty one. If you picture reading alone on a deserted shore, look north to Nilaveli or Kuchchaveli. If you picture a swim followed by a short barefoot walk to lunch, Uppuveli is exactly that.

The strip mixes beachfront hotels, small boutique-style properties and simple guesthouses a street or two back from the sand. The compact layout is the advantage: whatever your budget, you are within walking distance of several places to eat and a beach bar or two.

Because the area is small, beachfront rooms are limited and the best-located properties fill first in season. Booking early for July and August is sensible. Guesthouses behind the beachfront offer noticeably better value at the cost of a two-minute walk.

First-time visitors who want one base that does everything, friends traveling together, couples who want dinners out rather than seclusion, and budget travelers who want a beach without depending on tuk-tuks for every meal. Uppuveli is 10 to 15 minutes from Trincomalee Town by tuk-tuk, which makes the fort, Koneswaram Temple, the markets, the bus stand and the train station easy half-day territory. Nilaveli and the Pigeon Island boats are 15 to 20 minutes further north. The Commonwealth War Cemetery, small and moving, sits right by the Uppuveli road.
