Plenty of places market themselves as beachfront while sitting a street back. The distinction matters most in Uppuveli, where the strip is dense; in Nilaveli and Kuchchaveli, properties on the beach side of the coast road are typically true beachfront.

Uppuveli for beachfront plus walkable dinners, with the caveat that true beachfront rooms are limited and go first in July and August. Nilaveli for beachfront with space, where the resort-style properties give direct beach access and quiet evenings. Kuchchaveli for beachfront as the whole point, at properties designed so you never need to leave.

Dutch Bay and Trincomalee Town do not offer beachfront hotels in this sense; there you stay near the beach, not on it.

Beachfront is a May to September purchase. In the northeast monsoon months, roughly October to January, the sea is rougher and a beachfront room buys weather rather than swimming. Off-season prices reflect that honestly.
