The town sits on a peninsula between the Indian Ocean and one of the largest natural harbors in the world, a fact that shaped its history: Portuguese, Dutch and British fleets all contested it, and Fort Frederick on the headland carries the layers, first fortified in the 1620s and rebuilt by the Dutch in 1660. At the tip of the headland, Koneswaram Temple stands on Swami Rock above a drop of around 120 meters to the sea.

For travelers, though, Trincomalee is mostly a beach destination with a town attached. The pattern of a typical visit: base at a beach north of town, spend a half day on the temple and fort, a morning at Pigeon Island, and let the rest be sand and sea.

Kuchchaveli, about 30 kilometers north, is the empty, secluded stretch with a few high-end resorts. Nilaveli, 16 kilometers out, is the long, quiet flagship beach and the base for Pigeon Island. Uppuveli, 6 kilometers from town, is the social beach with restaurants on the sand. Dutch Bay is the town beach below the fort. Marble Beach, 16 kilometers south inside the sheltered harbor geography, has the calmest water of all and fills with local families on weekends.

Koneswaram Temple and the walk up through Fort Frederick, past colonial-era buildings and resident deer, is the essential half day. Pigeon Island National Park is the essential morning. Kanniya's seven hot springs make an easy stop on the road out of town, and in season whale watching boats look for blue and sperm whales offshore. The fish market and the streets around Pathirakali Amman Kovil reward an unhurried town wander.
